Barb Lewis received a BA in Biology from SUNY College at Buffalo, an AAS in Animal
Health Technology from Colorado Mountain College, and an MA in Adult and Higher
Education with a Biology emphasis, from Morehead State University (MSU). She was a
Clinical Pathology Laboratory Technician at The Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in
Boston before accepting a teaching position in MSU’s Veterinary Technology Program in
1981. She achieved the rank of Associate Professor, with teaching responsibilities in all
aspects of laboratory testing, including clinical pathology lectures, labs and clinicals.
Equipping her students with a solid foundation and a strong work ethic, she challenged
them to take an active role in their education and instilled in them a thirst for lifelong
learning. Following curriculum review and classroom observation, she was awarded
MSU’s 2012 Distinguished Teacher Award. After a 35 year teaching career, Barb retired
in 2016, and was granted emeritus status in recognition of meritorious service to MSU.
A Life Member of the Kentucky Veterinary Technician Association (KVTA), Barb was the
recipient of the 2012 KVTA Veterinary Technician of the Year Award. She helped
organize CE events, represented KVTA on the Executive Board of the Kentucky
Veterinary Medical Association, and had input on decisions affecting KY technicians
including legislative changes which created an LVT voting member position on the state
licensing board, and most recently addressed Title Protection and Scope of Practice. In
2022, Barb was presented with the first KVTA Lifetime Achievement Award, in
recognition of a lifetime of compassionate and dedicated service towards the
advancement of Kentucky’s veterinary technician community.
Barb is a charter member of AVCPT, served as the academy’s first president, and is the
current treasurer.
Barb is enjoying retirement, and remains active in the veterinary field through the
AVCPT and KVTA. She is thankful to have had the opportunity to impact the veterinary
technology profession as an educator and through involvement in veterinary and
technician organizations.
A native New Yorker, Barb grew up in NYC, and lived in Buffalo, NY, Glenwood Springs,
CO, Boston, MA and Ft. Collins, CO before moving to Kentucky where she met her
husband, Darrell. Living on the outskirts of the Daniel Boone National Forest and nearby
Cave Run Lake they have enjoyed boating, swimming, fishing and camping. Their
daughter and son-in-law live nearby, as do two grandkids, children of Darrell’s son. Barb
is an active member of her church and women’s group, and enjoys live concerts,
spending time with family and friends, gardening, canning Darrell’s garden crops, birding
and traveling. The desert southwest, Colorado, the ocean and Cape Cod remain
favorites. An avid Kentucky Wildcats Basketball fan, Barb enjoys NCAA basketball and
football.
